...is that of conservation. By restoring teeth with white fillings instead of black we conserve much more of the tooth. By augmenting sockets after taking teeth out we maintain the bone and stop it from shrinking away which is a huge problem for a lot of denture wearers. By placing implants instead of cutting away healthy tooth to place bridges, and by using crowns and veneers actually bonded to teeth and not just simply cemented on we conserve tooth tissue. Bleaching is nowadays very common and is totally conservative, in the past we might have cut a lot of tooth away and placed veneers or crowns instead, of course it might well be that the only option to correct a defect is by crowning or veneering a tooth still.
